Rethinking Tarot for the Digital Age

Tarot is deeply personal. It's symbolic, intuitive, and reflective. But when tarot went digital, something got lost. Most online tarot apps felt like lifeless templates, with recycled meanings and zero emotional connection.

MirAI started with a bold question: What if your tarot reading could be as unique as your question? What if an app could feel like a real reader who knows your story?

That was the vision. Bring the magic of tarot to mobile, using AI to personalize the experience in ways never done before.

My Role

From research and product design to visual identity and AI tool selection, I wore all the hats. My role wasn’t just to design screens. It was to shape the product's soul and ensure the tech behind it matched the experience we wanted to create.

Competitive Landscape and User Psychology

To start, I explored the current market.

What I found:

Most tarot apps reused the same card interpretations.

Personalization was shallow, if present at all.

Visuals were either low-quality or templated.

More importantly, I looked at how people engage with tarot:

They seek answers to personal questions.

They enjoy ritual, symbolism, and imagery.

They often want to share insights with friends.

This helped form our guiding principle: MirAI should feel like a reading that was meant for you, and only you.

Bringing Tarot to Life, Digitally

With that foundation, I mapped out the key parts of the experience:

Custom Spreads: Let users choose formats that fit their needs.

User Intent Input: Ask a question, set an intention.

AI Response: Use an LLM to generate personalized card interpretations.

AI Visuals: Generate custom tarot imagery using image models.

Save & Share: Make it easy to revisit readings and share highlights.

I also included fun ideas like choosing your "Oracle Personality" a unique tone of voice for readings. Serious, poetic, or playful? Your choice.

Finding the Right AI Stack

The hardest part was balancing quality, performance, and cost. I evaluated:

Text Models: OpenAI, LLaMA

Image Models: DALL-E, Midjourney, Stable Diffusion (CivitAI, Unstable Diffusion), Leonardo AI, Blue Willow

What I prioritized:

Real-time generation

High-quality, stylized imagery

Personalization through prompt engineering

APIs that played well with mobile

Eventually, I settled on using OpenAI for text and Stable Diffusion (with tuned prompts and model weights) for imagery.

Final Thoughts

MirAI isn’t just an app that uses AI. It’s an app about using AI to create meaning. In a space filled with templated responses and generic tools, it stood out by designing for emotion, story, and curiosity.

When technology is invisible and magic feels real, that’s when you know the design is working.
